Uscito nelle sale il 1 maggio del 1935 e premiato con 4 Oscar (regia, sceneggiatura, musica, protagonista), The Informer, è il film che consacrò definitivamente John Ford come regista. Si ricostruì in studio un intero quartiere di Dublino degli anni ’20. Luci, ambienti, e scene furono organizzati in modo tale da evocare le atmosfere del cinema espressionista tedesco, che era universalmente considerato cinema artistico per eccellenza. Lo sforzo fu quello di produrre un film d’arte di sapore europeo, tanto che lo stesso appare un po’ anomalo nella filmografia di Ford. Il regista si sentì molto impegnato nell’impresa, partecipando anche alla sceneggiatura, perché si sentiva molto legato al Sinn Fein, alla sua patria, e all’epopea dell’indipendenza irlandese. Parte del fascino di The Informer, è dovuta alla fotografia (forti contrasti, luci di taglio, controluci notturne, selciati umidi, filtri diffusori) ed alla interpretazione del migliore (grosso, goffo, impacciato, fragile) Victor McLaglen che sia mai comparso davanti all’obiettivo. L’angoscia di questo traditore incosciente è inserita in un dramma sociale ben più grave, in cui il regista inserisce il tema cattolico di fondo.
