I went to see this with my friend last weekend when it came out, and we are both major literature nerds. We'd both read the source material several times and were so stoked to see it. I absolutely agree with your thoughts on the mental-illness-as-horror-trope being frustrating. It's not as though the trope as used in this film shows the true horror of mental illness (e.g. the actual horror of being a person suffering a mental illness and not being able to control your thoughts/hallucinations) but rather relies on the oh they're just crazy as a lazy explanation of the phenomena that the protagonist undergoes. Overall, the effects straddled a line between early 00's films and Disney World's Haunted Mansion. I read that the director had mostly done music videos previously, and that's why there are so many wonderfully striking images, but a lot of what was supposed to be truly frightening just left me scratching my head. I think the film itself is very fragmented and frustrating to watch because the story is not coherently told. Thanks, as always, for your thoughtful review.

Before leaving she visits her mother, who lives in a mental institution because she suffers from delusions. Upon arriving at the Fairchild Estate, Kate is informed by the caretaker Mrs. Grose that Flora witnessed her parents die in a car accident outside the house's gate and is a "special case. Kate meets Flora who gives her a tour of the grounds, and confesses that she is afraid Kate will leave her without saying goodbye like Miss Jessel did, but Kate promises not to.
